The Skiing area of Arlberg

 

The region around the winter sport resorts of St. Anton, St. Christoph, Lech, Zürs and Stuben was named after an Alpine plant, – the “Arl”, that grew here in former times but which is very rare today. The Arlberg Alpine pass, situated at about 1,800 m above sea level and forms the watershed between the Danube and the Rhine. The pass also connect the provinces of Tyrol and Vorarlberg.
   

   
This stunning mountainous landscape with guaranteed snow from November to April with a huge variety of slopes makes the Arlberg mountains to one of the most beautiful and popular skiing areas of Austria. 440 km of downhill runs and slopes are waiting to be enjoyed by all winter sport fans. There are many skiing schools where the beginner can learning the wonderful skill of skiing . The snow on the Arlberg mountains is particularly dry. Immediately after the Christmas vacations a special time called the “powder-snow weeks” are proclaimed. This is a time of great fun and enjoyment for those who like skiing in fresh powder snow. An important advantage of this region is the fact that many ski slopes are well connected with each other - Albona which is beside Stuben in Vorarlberg is connected with the skiing areas of St. Anton and St. Christoph in Tyrol. So you can cross the “border” on your skis!
   
St. Anton especially caters for young snow-lovers: Free-riding - skiing far away from marked slopes - , Snowboarding and Carving are very fashionable sports in St. Anton. A Boarderland which has everything a snowboard could possibly desire - a Carving Area, a Funpark, a Halfpipe, a Table Top, a Por Jump, a Long Jump and Speed-Checks. There is another great Boarderland in Schlegelopf in Lech which has a Fun-Park, a Boarder-Cross, a Halfpipe and a Free-riding area. Skiing courses, great shops and hospitable bars round everything of to make this a great holiday in the snow.
   
There are many cross-country trails for country skiers. Try the highly recommended Verwall cross country trail, one of the most beautiful trails in Austria that takes you through the idyllic Verwalltal valley. There are also skating trails here. The longest one runs from St. Jakob to Schnann. Next to Pettneu there are three skating trails.
Pettneu and Kloesterle in the Stanzertal valley have about 40 km of cross-country trails each – a real challenge for every cross-country skier. Moreover, St. Anton has a 4.3 km long tobogganing run, taking from you Gampen to Nassrein. There is a difference in altitude of 500 m between the two points. On Tuesdays and Thursdays floodlit tobogganing takes place on the 1,5 km long tobogganing run from Oberlech to Lech.
